What Does “Wielding Your Sword” Mean?

Wielding your Sword.

This is a term I use a lot in my teaching and writings, because it is a fundamental element of living your Kingdom Purpose Life.  I dare say, you cannot live a powerful Christian life without wielding your Sword.  You cannot please your King without utilizing the instrument He issued for accomplishing His work in His Kingdom.

What does Wield Mean?

According to Dictionary.com, the definition of wield includes:

  • to exercise (power, authority, influence, etc.), as in ruling or dominating.
  • to use (a weapon, instrument, etc.) effectively; handle or employ actively.
We are to master handling our sword so that we can be used by God to effectively and actively exercise authority and power for the work of His Kingdom.

What Is This Sword?

In the armor of God outlined in Ephesians 6, there is only one weapon listed.

…the Sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God

Ephesians 6:17

We are told to stand firm in the power of His might, fully armored, with our Sword ready for use.  And that Sword – that weapon – is the Word of God.

Did you know you are commanded to use the Word of God as a weapon?

Words are something you speak.  When you open your mouth and words fall out, that is no casual event.  Jesus Himself said we would all give an account for every careless word we speak.  This is because words are so powerful, they are actually weapons.  Words have power.

In Jesus’ famous sermon on the mount (Luke 6), He tells us to bless those who curse us.  Blessing and curses are delivered via words.  He is teaching you how to use your Sword of the Spirit.  No matter how anyone speaks to you or treats you, you must respond by the Word of God – with the Word of God in your mouth, and coming out of your mouth.

We see Jesus’ example of this when Lucifer tempted Him in the desert.  His responses were always by the Word of God.  He didn’t bombard Lucifer with attacking words, although in the natural he had every right to cut loose on him.  He just spoke Truth.  The Word of God is the weapon Jesus used to defeat Lucifer that day.

That is how we are to wield our Sword.

Every time you open your mouth, you need to consider what words come out.  Do they line up with Truth?  Do they build up, or tear down?  Are they necessary, or should you hold your tongue?  The real question…

Is the Spirit of God leading you to say those words?

It takes practice to use any form of weaponry.  The time is now to practice mastering your Sword of the Spirit.  Your emotions and thoughts will fight this process, but you must train those emotions to be obedient to Truth.  Respond in Truth.  Speak only Truth.

Then you will successfully wield your Sword and find God’s power working through you to accomplish amazing things for His Kingdom.
