Because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.
Romans 10:9
This passage from Romans is one of the most notoriously memorized and quoted scriptures in the entire Bible. It is a popular tool of evangelism because it gets right to the point of what it takes to be saved; and a quick answer is just what our fast-food-I-want-it-now society demands.
Before we jump on the instantaneous answer bandwagon, let’s take a step back and consider what this passage is really saying. Remember, Paul was not writing from a representative republic governmental mindset (or a democracy mindset either). He was writing from a kingdom government mindset where the term Lord was more than just a title before a name.
Most of us have no problem confessing with our mouth that Jesus is Lord, because we can easily allow Him to hold the title of Lord in our lives. Essentially we are confessing that we will accept that He holds that level of office or power and is qualified or entitled to be Lord. We accept that He is from God and that He is higher in power than we are.
But in Paul’s day when this passage was penned, the people knew just what Paul was saying. To confess Jesus as Lord is to confess that Jesus is the ultimate authority in your life and you voluntarily place yourself under His rule. If you confess Jesus as Lord, you are no longer master or ruler over your life. You no longer choose how your life goes. You no longer live for your own desires, passions and plans. You willingly become a servant for the one that you confess as your Lord. Now your life is lived to fulfill your Lord’s will, plans, and desires rather than your own. His will becomes your mission – your purpose – in life.
I think it is time to step back and reconsider: do you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord?
