Matzah Bread – In Remembrance of Me

In the Jewish tradition, Passover  is a week long celebration.  It usually falls around the time of Christian Easter Sunday, celebrating the resurrection of Jesus.  During this time, our walk with the LORD is brought into focus for many of us.

The very same night He would be arrested, tortured and crucified, Christ our Passover Lamb instructed His disciples at their Passover Supper to break bread  and “do this in remembrance of me,” of how His body was broken for our redemption.  (1 Corinthians 11:24)  We were to take the bread that represented His body, bless it, and give thanks and praise to Haggo’el our Redeemer, and eat it.

We are instructed to thank God for our daily bread in the model prayer from Matthew 6:9-13. This bread is sometimes referred to as matzah.  It is a flat bread without leaven and is made by hand with only two simple ingredients: flour and water.  I personally think that this very basic ingredients are chosen to represent our LORD contain deep spiritual meanings, and could be a whole bible study on their own.  For instance, leaven represents sin, and Jesus was without sin.  So the bread that represents His body is made “without sin.”

How to make your own Matzah bread:

Grab a cast iron skillet and set to heat up on medium to high heat WITHOUT OIL.

Put 3/4 cup all purpose flour or bread flour (either will do) into a mixing bowl

Make a well in the center of the flour, and add 1/4 cup of water

Mix together with by hand until you can form a ball.

Turn it out onto a clean, dry, then slightly floured surface, and kneed for one minute.

Reshape into ball. Then cut into four equal sizes. Roll back into ball shape.

Then roll each out  separately as though you were making a pie crust.

Cook each again separately in your hot cast iron skillet – NO OIL.

While each roundish dough cooks it will form pockets of air, don’t worry they will flatten again specially when off the heat.

Cook when patches of brown appear on one side then flip, like a pancake and cook the other side the same.

Repeat until all four are cooked.

Easy!

Once cooled completely store leftovers in air tight container.

Time to eat!  Don’t forget to give thanks and praise!   Remember this – made by your own hands represents the body of our Lord and Savior.
